We went into the great forest of Chiapas. We had stopped and put down blankets so full of color they looked like wild birds spread out on the jungle floor. We slept there, intimidated by the noise, the jungle’s telegraph messages. Here, there, and everywhere, thousands of insects transmitted a deafening sound.Enigmatic Mexico spread its green shadows over ancient structures, remote paintings, jewels and monuments, colossal heads, stone animals. All this lay about in the jungle, the untold riches of fabulous Mexico. You dazzle me with your mammoth vegetation: and later with your placid lakes, high up in the mountains, like eyes forgotten by wasteful gods.
